What Are Terpenes and How Do They Help with Pain Relief

Many people have discovered the variety of benefits high-quality CBD products can provide. People who are less familiar with CBD often have many questions about it. One such question that frequently comes up is, “What are terpenes?” Terpenes are often listed on CBD products’ packaging, and those who have never heard the term may feel wary of an unknown compound in their CBD product of choice.

Learn more about what terpenes are, the benefits they can provide, and how to choose the best CBD products for pain relief below!

What Are Terpenes?

Terpenes are a naturally occurring component in hemp, and many other plants and they provide some of the flavors, aromas, and colors in certain plants. Researchers still don’t know everything about terpenes, but according to Healthline, many believe that terpenes are used by plants to protect themselves from being consumed or being damaged due to harsh weather conditions.

When it comes to how they affect humans, current research supports the hypothesis that terpenes help other components in cannabis, such as CBD and THC, work better than they would otherwise. The belief that CBD works better in the presence of terpenes and THC is called the “entourage effect,” and this is why many prefer full-spectrum CBD instead of CBD isolate.

Best Terpenes for Pain Relief

“Terpenes” is a general term to describe this group of components in cannabis (and most other plants), but each terpene also has its own name and function. Some of the best terpenes for pain relief include linalool, limonene, eucalyptol, beta-caryophyllene, and myrcene.

Linalool is often extracted from lavender, and there is some evidence to suggest that it can be helpful with improving sleep, reducing depressive symptoms, and providing pain relief. Limonene is an oil that comes from citrus fruit peels, and it is often credited with reducing inflammation, stress, and oxidants throughout the body, which can all help with pain relief.

Eucalyptol, beta-caryophyllene, and myrcene all also have anti-inflammatory properties that can help bring down swelling and reduce the pain associated with injuries, muscle aches, and everyday soreness.

How to Find Quality CBD Products

Just because a product has the letters “CBD” on the label doesn’t mean that it’s a quality item that can produce the benefits you are looking for. The CBD industry is full of bad actors that dilute their products or don’t even put actual CBD in them and hope you won’t notice. To avoid these types of CBD sellers, look for CBD products that are third-party tested, which means that an outside agency analyzes the products to make sure they contain exactly what they say they contain.

If a CBD seller doesn’t have a certificate of analysis readily available on their website or in their store, ask an employee if they have one you can look at. CBD stores that can’t produce a certificate of analysis or don’t undergo third-party testing should be avoided, as there is no telling what their products may contain.

Aside from third-party testing, try to find CBD products that are made with organic ingredients and don’t contain any additives or preservatives that may irritate the skin. Finally, purchase CBD products that contain a proper amount of CBD so that you actually feel the effects you desire. Many CBD retailers sell products that provide insufficient doses of the compound, and it’s highly unlikely that any effects will be felt.
